When does OSHA's field sanitation rule apply?
OSHA 29 CFR 1928.110 applies to farms with 11 or more employees doing hand labor in the field on any day in the past 12 months. Hand labor includes planting, cultivating, harvesting and packing in the field. It does not cover machine work only.
Official text: OSHA 1928.110.
How many porta potties and sinks does a farm crew need?
A farm crew needs 1 toilet and 1 handwashing facility for every 20 employees, or fraction of 20, located within a quarter-mile walk of each worker. A crew of 35 needs 2 toilets and 2 hand wash stations. Workers of each sex are entitled to privacy; lockable units meet that need.
| Crew size | Toilets | Hand wash stations |
|---|---|---|
| 11–20 | 1 | 1 |
| 21–40 | 2 | 2 |
| 41–60 | 3 | 3 |
| 61–80 | 4 | 4 |
How do you move units as the crew moves?
Field crews move across the farm, and the units must stay within a quarter mile. Towable units on a trailer, or standard units moved on each service visit, keep up with the crew. Weekly service is the Florida minimum; harvest crews in summer often need two visits.
