Is a wheelchair-accessible porta potty ADA-compliant?
A wheelchair-accessible porta potty is built for wheelchair users, with ground-level entry, a 32-inch door frame, handrails and a 62-inch-square cabin. Whether a setup meets the ADA also depends on the route to the door, the surface and the number of accessible units, so your venue or permit office makes the final call.
Many people search for an "ADA porta potty." The manufacturer of the unit class we use describes it as wheelchair accessible, so that is the term we use. The 2010 ADA Standards, section 213.2, require that where portable toilets are clustered, at least 5 percent, and no fewer than one, in each cluster be accessible.
How many accessible units does my event need?
Your event needs at least 1 accessible unit in every cluster of porta potties, and 1 for every 20 units in a cluster. A 6-unit cluster needs 1 accessible unit. A 30-unit cluster needs 2. Count the accessible unit as part of your total, not on top of it.
| Units in a cluster | Accessible units (5%, min. 1) |
|---|---|
| 1–20 | 1 |
| 21–40 | 2 |
| 41–60 | 3 |
| 61–80 | 4 |
What space does an accessible unit need?
An accessible unit needs a level, firm pad about 6 feet square, plus a clear, firm path to the door. Grass is fine when dry and level; soft sand and gravel are hard for wheelchairs. Place the unit close to the main route, not behind the other units.
The 2010 ADA Standards describe the turning space inside an accessible room as a 60-inch-diameter circle or a T-shaped space. Ask the venue whether they require plywood or a mat on soft ground.

What is the difference between an ADA unit and a handicap unit?
People use both names for the same thing: a larger unit a wheelchair can roll into and turn around in. The unit we rent has ground-level entry, handrails and a cabin about 62 inches square.
Does the accessible unit have a sink?
The accessible unit has no sink, because the turning space takes the room. Place a hand wash station next to it on a firm, level spot.
Can older guests use the accessible unit?
Older guests, parents with small children and anyone using a walker or cane find the accessible unit easier: it has a wider door, handrails and no step up.
