How many porta potties do I need? Use the calculator

The calculator below gives your count from Florida's official tables, the 2010 ADA Standards and our 1-per-50-guests guideline for private parties under 250 people. It shows the rule behind each number, so you can share it with a venue, inspector or committee.

Under 250 guests: our planning guideline is 1 unit per 50 guests for up to 5 hours = 3.

Method: Florida Admin. Code 62-6.0101 Tables PR I and PR II, OSHA 1926.51, 2010 ADA Standards 213.2. Your venue or permit office can require more.

Porta potties for private parties under 250 guests

Plan 1 porta potty per 50 guests for a party of up to 5 hours, and add 1 unit for a longer party or an open bar. A 75-guest birthday party needs 2 units. A 120-guest reunion with beer needs 4: 3 for the guests plus 1 for alcohol.

Florida's table for public events of 250 or more

Florida rule 62-6.0101 Table PR I sets the minimum restrooms for public events by daily attendance and hours, assuming service once a day. A 1,000-person, 4-hour event needs 7 restrooms; 5,000 people for 8 hours need 36. With service twice a day, divide by 2 and round up.

Excerpt of Florida Administrative Code 62-6.0101 Table PR I. Permanent restrooms open to attendees can reduce the count.

Construction crews: Florida and OSHA counts

Florida requires 1 restroom per 10 workers with weekly service, which is stricter than OSHA's minimum of 1 toilet for 20 or fewer workers. A 25-person crew needs 3 units under Florida's table. Follow the stricter rule, and add 1 hand wash station per 10 restrooms.

Details and a worked example are on the construction porta potty page.

Adjustments, in whole units

Adjust the base count in whole units, never percentages. Add 1 unit when alcohol is served. Add 1 unit for a party longer than 5 hours. Make at least 1 unit in each cluster wheelchair-accessible. Add 1 hand wash station whenever food is served, and 1 per 10 restrooms in all cases.

  • Worked example: 300-guest festival, 6 hours, beer and food. Florida table: 250 → 500 row at 6 hours = 4. Alcohol: +1 = 5. ADA: 1 of the 5 is accessible. Hand wash: 1 station for food.
  • Wedding: 150 guests, 5 hours, open bar: 3 + 1 = 4 toilets, or a two-stall trailer plus 2 deluxe units.

Questions renters ask

How many people can use one porta potty?

A standard porta potty serves about 50 party guests over 5 hours, or 10 workers for a 40-hour week with weekly service. Florida's event table allows more people per unit at large public events because units are serviced daily.

How many stalls does a restroom trailer need for 200 guests?

A 4-stall restroom trailer handles about 200 guests for a 5-hour event. A 2-stall trailer handles about 75 to 100.

Do kids count toward the guest number?

Count every person who will attend, children included. Young children often use the restroom more often, not less.
