Does heat make a porta potty smell worse?
Heat makes a porta potty smell worse, because warm waste breaks down faster and the cabin traps hot air. A unit in full Florida sun can run well above the outdoor temperature inside. Shade, airflow and more frequent service are the three fixes that work.
- Place the unit in afternoon shade, on the east side of a building or under trees with high limbs.
- Face the door away from the afternoon sun.
- Keep the vent pipe clear of branches.
Should I add service visits in summer?
Add a second weekly service in summer when a unit serves 8 or more workers, or when it sits in full sun. Florida's construction table lets you halve the number of units with twice-weekly service, so a 20-person crew can use 1 unit serviced twice a week instead of 2 units serviced once.
Table source: Florida rule 62-6.0101.
What about summer parties and weddings?
For summer events, add a hand wash station so guests can rinse with water, and consider a restroom trailer for weddings, since it has air conditioning. Plan the count with the guideline of 1 unit per 50 guests and add 1 for a bar; heat leads guests to drink more.
